The battle of the Korsun-Cherkassy Pocket lasted from 24 January until 16 February 1944, where after bloody fighting the core German force managed to break out from Soviet commanders' Ivan Konev and Nickolai Vatutin's pincer movement, but at heavy cost in men and materiel.

It is estimated some 30,000-55,000 Wehrmacht troops (both within the pocket and the relieving units) were killed or captured in the brief but fierce battle; whilst Soviet killed or missing amounted to over 24,000 with a further 56,000 non-fatal casualties.
